Wang Yi: China Plays a Unique and Constructive Role in Africa's Peace and Security
2019/01/05

On January 4, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Alpha Barry of Burkina Faso jointly met the press after their talks in Ouagadougou. A journalist asked about China-Africa cooperation in the field of peace and security.

Wang Yi expressed that peace is of vital importance to Africa and serves as the prerequisite and guarantee for the development of the African continent. The Chinese side is the first that comes to the aid of African friends and has always played a unique and constructive role in peace and security in Africa. For a long time, the Chinese side has actively participated in the mediation of the South Sudanese issue and other hotspot issues in Africa, and supported the African people in solving African problems in African ways. The Chinese side has actively supported the peacekeeping operations of the United Nations (UN) in Africa. China is already the second largest contributor of UN peacekeeping funds and the largest contributor of peacekeepers to Africa among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Not long ago, as the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, the Chinese side called for a special open debate over the African peacekeeping operations to promote more countries to pay more attention to peace and security issues in Africa.

Wang Yi said that in recent years, China has increased its investment in Africa's peace and security affairs under the framework of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. We have actively implemented the military assistance measures announced by President Xi Jinping to the African Union and supported the building of the African Standby Force and the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crisis. We are also very concerned about the security challenges facing the Sahel region and appreciate the efforts of the Group of Five for the Sahel (G5 Sahel) to maintain regional peace and stability. The Chinese side supports the UN in providing the necessary financial support for the G5 Sahel joint force. It is worthwhile and should be done without being obstructed any more. The Chinese side has also earnestly practiced what it advocates and provided necessary military assistance to G5 Sahel member states through bilateral channels. This is an important measure taken by the Chinese side to implement the eight major initiatives and a direct support to Burkina Faso and other countries in maintaining regional peace and security.

In a word, the Chinese side will continue to follow closely the peace and security in Africa and make our efforts in and contributions to maintaining peace and promoting security in Africa within our capacity according to the aspirations and needs of African countries.
