On April 3, on the occasion of traditional Chinese Qingming Festival (Commemoration Day), the Chinese Consulate in Mumbai and Dr. Kotnis Memorial Committee jointly held an online memorial event for Dr. Dwarkanath Shantaram Kotnis. Consul General Tang Guocai attended and delivered remarks. Ms. Shrikanchana Yannam, Mayor of Solapur where Dr. Kotnis was from, Mr. Kant Kotnis, cousin of Dr. Kotnis, Mr. G.H.Fernandes, Chairman of the India-China Friendship Association (ICFA), Mr. Dnyaneshwar Mulay, Member of National Human Rights Commission of India, Mr. V.Shinde, Vice Chancellor of Deccan University, Mr. Rajendra Jadhav, Founder of Dr. Kotnis Memorial Committee, as well as representatives of the medical, cultural, educational, industrial and commercial sectors in India attended the event.

Tang appreciated the contributions made by Dr. Kotnis Memorial Committee and the India-China Friendship Association to the cause of China-India friendship and thanked Dr. Kotnis' family and his hometown Solapur for their firm and strong support to China-India friendly exchanges and cooperation. He further welcomed friends from all walks of life to attend the event. He said that China's National Commemoration Day is coming, and Lu You, a poet of the Song Dynasty once wrote, "wherever you are, whatever you wear, it is not too late to travel back to one's home place in Qingming." Both Chinese and Indian civilizations attach great importance to the tradition of family and the unity of human and nature. It is of special significance to commemorate Dr. Kotnis and carry forward his spirit and the friendship between the Chinese and Indian people during the Qingming Festival.

Tang pointed out that Dr. Kotnis is the common pride of the Chinese and Indian people as well as an outstanding embodiment of humanity. He treated the wounded in the front-line of the war, regardless of personal safety. He succumbed to overwork and sacrificed his precious life. Chairman Mao Zedong spoke highly of Dr. Kotnis' internationalist spirit in his elegy, and the Chinese people will never forget him. Dr. Kotnis devoted himself to China's anti-fascist war and the world's anti-colonial cause. He was a great internationalist soldier and martyr walking in the right historical direction. History has shown that pursuing Western colonialism and militarism may bring temporary comfort to some people, but it has brought grave disasters and painful lessons to China, India and Asia. To carry forward the spirit of Dr. Kotnis, we need to follow the trend of the times and the right path for mankind, promote peace, justice and multilateral cooperation, while oppose hegemony, power politics, Cold War mentality and colonial remnants. Major developing countries like China and India can only achieve sustainable development and prosperity when they stand on their own feet.

Tang briefed the participants on the China-India relations and cooperation at local level. He said the Coronavirus tsunami prevails one wave after another. The whole world is exploring ways to fight the epidemic and looking for solutions to sustain livelihood of the masses. Facing the pandemic, the poor suffer the most. China has eradicated poverty nationwide, which attracts world's attention. The rural revitalization strategy has drawn a grand blueprint for poverty alleviation in China. Both China and India are great agricultural civilizations, and most of the poor population resides in rural areas. In the long run, rural areas are engine rather than burden for healthy and sustainable development of China and India. China and India shoulder the vital trust of nearly one-third of the world's population, and both have a historical mission of development and revival. We join hand to fight the pandemic, ensuring the bottom-line and guaranteeing stable development, will set an example for the rest of the world.

Tang emphasized this year marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. The secret of China's governance and development lies in the fact that the CPC and the Chinese Government always put the people first. Dr. Kotnis is the bridge between the Chinese and Indian people. Solapur, hometown of Dr. Kotnis and sister city of Shijiazhuang of China, plays a special role in local cooperation and friendship between the nations. The southwest coastal area of India and the southeast coast of China are at the forefront of reform, opening up, development and revitalization of the two countries. It is common aspiration of the people to promote reform, develop hand in hand, step up pragmatical cooperation and improve livelihood. Success only comes through hard work. The hard-working and honest people of our two countries are of the same heart and soul. Let us carry forward the spirit of Dr. Kotnis, work together for the China-India friendship, and live up to the expectations of the great people of China and India.

Indian guests commemorated and spoke highly of Dr. Kotnis. They expected India and China could promote practical development of exchanges and cooperation for the mutual development of the two countries and the rise of Asia.
